Exchange Student Program
Overview
The Student Exchange Program offers the people of Meade the opportunity to study for extended periods of time outside the city limits without losing the benefits of citizenship. Citizens must complete the mandatory Military Service Training prior to their departure date. Meade strongly discourages travel of untrained citizens without the accompaniment of protective service persons.
Eligible students from outside the city may enroll in a college of their choice through the Student Exchange Program. In the event an exchange cannot be arranged through the program due to a status of non-cooperation on the part of the external candidate’s government, students may be required to pay a deposit for their participation in the program.

What is an eligible student?
Students applying for the exchange program will be required to pass tests of their basic skills including: hygiene, etiquette, reading, writing and mathematical knowledge. Students that cannot meet these basic requirements cannot attend a college. Ineligible students may become eligible by participating in a remedial education program that is offered at the secure Meade Militia Outpost.

How long is the term of the exchange?
Students participate in a variety of educational programs and the terms will vary. The typical student attending all courses in a college of magic may expect to be in Meade for five years. Students that choose a strictly academic course generally complete the course in three years. In any case, students may choose to leave the city and terminate their participation at any time.

What if I am not eligible?
The Remedial Education Program is designed for both citizens and external candidates with educational deficiencies. However, external candidates will be required to leave a deposit. For security reasons, students live on the grounds of the outpost and are not permitted to enter the city proper. Visitors are permitted at all times but are limited in total number to ensure the security of the other students.

What is the deposit?
Deposit amounts vary by school and the selected program. In all cases, a minimum deposit of 100 GP must be made into the Meade Bank to cover any damages or fines that may be incurred by the student during their stay.

Sparing

Briar walked up the muddy road to the training yard. Omicron and Willow were already there and waved her over to join them.

“I was just telling Willow how much I enjoy watching these field events.”

The expansive field before them held an obstacle course comprised of hurdles, tunnels, hula-hoops, hopscotch, jump rope, putting hole, and an overhead hang with a moat.

“The little ones are just so cute!” Briar said excitedly.

“I didn’t know you were so enthusiastic about children. Don’t you usually work with the advanced archers?” Willow asked.

“We gnomes have an appreciation for all sports. I can’t wait to see how many fall in that muddy moat!” she chuckled.

“I know!” Omicron burst out laughing too.

“Okay, fine. I guess some of the events can be pretty funny. Just don’t laugh in front of the instructors. Some of them take this very seriously.” Willow burst out laugh but quickly regained her composure.

Teaching Meade’s Children

The children of Meade enjoy a structured school environment.

Fundamental School begins at age 2. Fundamental School reviews primary skills including the alphabet, numbers, time, town history, and manners. Totlings are separated into small groups of 5 or less to participate in structured socialization exercises twice per week. Their instructor will help them learn how to engage others in common social situations. The curriculum focus is on greetings and salutations, appropriate conversation topics, tea service, table manners and dress.

Premiering begins at age 3. Premiering totlings attend bi-weekly socialization sessions.  Fundamental School lessons are expanded and refined during Premiering. Students are evaluated on their behavior without regard to style. Graduates host their parents at the Annual Premiere Party upon completion.

Third year totlings do not attend structured schooling. These young children are instead allowed to explore the city. The purpose of this year is to give the totlings an opportunity to observe people in different occupations and gain knowledge of the workings of Meade. Many of the totlings will demonstrate a talent or interest for a particular job. Some will offer a sort of apprenticeship.

All children aged 5 years begin to attend Core School. Core School is attended daily the first year. Curriculum covers reading and writing common words, mathematical addition and subtraction, and peninsular history. Upon successful mastery of the first year curriculum, students are offered the opportunity to specialize their education.

Students from ages 6 to 12 will split their days. Morning hours are spent learning broad topics of interest. Afternoons, students will proceed to the specialized training of their choice. Choices include various apprenticeships, scholastic programs, performing arts, and magical arts.  Military Training is required for all students over the age of 12 and is not offered as a vocation to youngsters.
